2.SUGGESTED:Taber's Medical Dictionary, F. A. Davis Publishing Co., (any edition) or any Medical Dictionary if already have one. There are also some good medical dictionaries online. Course Design:During this course, there will be a combination of activities, quizzes and exams designed to help the student master Medical Terminology.
Students will work as a group in this course.You will be divided into Teams.Each Team is assigned a WIKI on WIKIspace.com.
If you haven’t used a WIKI before, don’t worry!It is pretty easy, a lot like Word or any Word Processing program.
The textbook has Review Exercises at the end of each Chapter, your job as a TEAM will be to fill in the answers to these exercises on you WIKI pages.
Each Team will also have a discussion board here on Angel where you can communicate with other team members.
Quizzes and Exams will be here on Angel.All material is posted with clear due dates, and the student is expected to submit completed materials in a timely fashion.Since this is an online course, the student may complete assigned tasks as they find the time available, as long as they are submitted by the due date..Please see schedule below for a listing of assignments and due dates.

Cognitive Learning Objectives
Given the word elements of medical terminology, the student will divide medical words into their component parts and identify the word roots, combining forms, prefixes and suffixes.
Explain the rules for building and defining medical words.
Define and give examples of operative, diagnostic, symptomatic, diminutive, adjective and noun sufixes.
Identify prefixes of position, number, negation and direction, and expalin how a prefix changes the meaning of a medical word.
Define terms associated with radiology, computed tomograhpy, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasonography to demonstrate an understanding of body imagin.
Identify diagnostic, symptomatic, surgical, and therapeutic terms related to the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reporductive.
Identify pharmacology related to the above systems.
Student Performance Objectives 1.Given the word elements of medical terminology, the student will identify word roots, combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes. 2.Students will explain the main functions of the major body systems and identify in diagrams the primary organs and structures of these body systems. 3.Students will define the word roots, combining forms, prefixes and suffixes of key surgical and medical terms. 4.Using support materials from the textbook and the internet, students will learn correct pronunciation of key surgical and medical terms. 5.Given a list of key surgical and medical terms, student will spell the terms correctly. 6.Given medidcal case studies/reports, students will translate these reports into everyday vernacular by defining the key surgical/medical terms.

Assignments Assignments will be varied and designed to offer a context for the system being studied.They will mostly be activities from the textbook; however, sometimes students will be asked to participate in the course discussion forum.Also, instructor may ask students to work with examples that are close to what the students will encounter on the medical chart. Quizzes & Exams Quizzes will be a combination of multiple choice, matching , identification of figures, fill in the blank. Exams will also be a combination of question styles, but will also include short answer essay questions. Class Participationassignments may occasionally include a component requiring student to interact with others on course discussion board. Homework please use the Angel Website to check for homework on a weekly basis.Please read instructions carefully, and complete all parts for full credit.
